America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon. They don’t
feel hurt. If the same two people meet again, even years later, they____the friendship .This can be quite difficult for us
Chinese to understand .Friendships between us develop more slowly but may become lifelong feelings, extending(
延
伸
)deeply into both families.
There is another difficult point for us to understand .Although Americans treat friends warmly in their personal
everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to them if it requires a great deal of time. But in China, we are usually
generous with our time. We, as hosts, will appear at an airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may
take day off from our work to act as guides to our friends. It is opposite in America, Americans can not manage the time
to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily plans. They will probably expect the visitors to get themselves from
the airport to the hotels. And they expect the visitors will phone them from there. Once the visitors arrive at their homes,
the welcome will be full, warm and real.
For Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to restaurants, except for
business matters. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life.
So accept their hospitality(

)at home and enjoy your visit in America!

You can not see any object unless light from that object gets into your eyes. Some of the things you see give
off light of their own. The sun, the stars, a lighted lamp are examples that can be seen by their own light. Such things are
luminous. Most of the things you see are not giving off light of their own. They are simply reflecting light that falls on
them from the sun or some other luminous bodies. The moon, for example, does not give off any light of its own. It is
non-luminous. You see it because sunlight falls on it and some of it reflects in our direction. So moon light is only second
hand sunlight.
When you look at a book, it sends to your eyes some of the light which falls on it, and you see the book. If light could
be kept out from where you are so that there would be no light for the book to reflect, then you could not see the book
even with your eyes wide open.
Light travels so fast that the time in which it travels from the book you are reading to your eyes is so short as if there
were no time at all. Light reaches us from the moon, which is about 380 000 kilometers away, in only a little more than a
second.
1
.
You can see the book because_______.
A
.
your eyes are close to it
C
.
it has light of its own
B
.
it reflects some of the sunlight
D
.

A
.
380 000 B
.
300 000 C
.
400 000 D
.
190 000
4
.
Which of the following is true?
A
.
The moment you open your eyes the light from the book travels to your eyes.
B
.
Light from the book is much shorter than that from the moon.
C
.
All the things you can see give off light.
D
.
Light travels so fast that there is no time for you to read.
5
.
What is the main idea of the passage?
A
.
You can see and read a book because you open your eyes.
B
.
Some objects are luminous, some not.
C
.
You can see things because of light.
D
.
Light travels very fast so you cannot notice it.

In front of my daughter, Shelly, was a bowl filled with cabbage. She hated cabbage. She only sat there in silence with
tears in her eyes.
“Shelly, my dear, why don’t you eat a little? If not, your mum will shout at us.”
Shelly didn’t feel happy. “OK, dad. I will eat, just a little.” Then Shelly said, “Dad, if I eat it all, will you give me what I
want?”
“Yes.”
Slowly she began to eat. It took her almost half an hour to finish all the food in the bowl. Then she came up to me and
said, “Dad, I want to have my hair cut off!”
“Shelly, why don’t you ask for something else? If we see your head like that, we’ll feel very sad,” I said.
“But Dad, you promised! Now you’re going back on your words. ”
I had to keep my promise. Shelly had all her hair cut off. She smiled.
On Monday morning, I took Shelly to school. Just when I arrived, a boy got out of a car and shouted, “Shelly, please
wait for me!”
Guess what? The boy had no hair, either.
“Sir, your daughter is great!” a man got out of the car and said, “This boy is my son, Harish. He has cancer. He lost his

After breakfast Martha went to visit her mother for the day. Mary felt lonely in the house without her so
she went outside into the bright sunshine. She ran round and round the fountain and soon she started to feel better. Ben
Weatherstaff was in the vegetable garden. He didn’t look cross that day so she went to speak to him.
“The spring’s coming,” he said to her. “Can you see those green points in the earth?”
Mary looked.
“What are they?” she asked.
“They’re spring flowers.” Then the robin appeared and sat on the ground near them.
“Is spring coming in the secret garden, too?” Mary asked Ben.
“Ask the robin,” said Ben, “He’s the only one who knows.” And he went back to work.
The robin was hopping around on the ground. Mary was watching him when she saw something in the earth. She
picked it up. It was an old key.
Mary looked at the key for a long time. Then she put it in her pocket and walked back to her room.
The next morning Martha was there as usual. She told Mary about her day at her mother’s house.
She brought a skipping rope as a present to Mary. Mary was not good at skipping at first. But she tried and tried
and soon she didn’t want to stop.
The sun was shining and the sky was blue. Mary skipped and counted and counted and skipped around the big
garden. She decided to skip along her favourite path outside the walled gardens. It was very long and she had to stop
before she arrived at the end of it because she was tired.
Then she saw the robin sitting on a long branch of the ivy on the wall. He chirped. Mary went up to him.
“You showed me the key yesterday,” she said. “Can you show me the door today?”
The robin flew to the top of the wall. Suddenly the wind blew the long branch of ivy to one side. Mary held it in her
hand because she could see something under it ---- a door!
Mary took the old key out of her pocket and put it in the lock of the door. It worked. She was inside the secret garden!
