Friendship
Friendship is a kind of emotion that almost all people need. It may
accompany us especially when we feel sad, disappointed, lonely or
frustrated. Therefore, people try their best to find out their true friends
who can share sorrows and happiness. However, what are true friends? As
far as I am concerned, true friends may have the following qualities:
Firstly, true friends will accompany us at all times even if they know they
may get trapped in the morass. Secondly, true friends will offer us help
when we are in need. Thirdly, true friends are willing to sacrifice
themselves to help us. Why do I say so? After reading my essay, you can
find answers by yourself.
Firstly, true friends will accompany us at all times even if they know they
may get trapped in the morass.
Tintin in Tibet is a comic book. Tintin is a hero in this book. Captain
Haddock is one of Tintin’s best friends. The story begins when they are
on vacation. After a long day’s hiking, Tintin comes back at the hotel. He
hears a piece of news from Captain Haddock that an air disaster happens
in Nepal. Then, they have a dinner. After dinner, Tintin and Captain
Haddock play chess while Tintin falls asleep and dreams about Chang
who is Tintin’s Chinese friend. But, it is a nightmare. In the dream, Chang
is lying there hurt, half buried by snow and holding out his hands to call
to Tintin for help. Next day, Tintin receives a letter from Chang
unexpectedly. It says that Chang will go to Europe which really makes
Tintin excited because it is Chang’s first visit to Europe and he hasn’t
seen Chang for many years. Nevertheless, when Tintin continues reading
the letter he finds Chang takes the plane to Katmandu in Nepal which is
reported to hit a mountain on the newspaper which he read yesterday.
What’s more, according to newspaper, there are no survivors. Tintin feel
grieve but he doesn’t believe Chang has been dead. He even dreamed
about Chang yesterday evening. Besides, he thinks it is not an ordinary
dream but a sort of premonition. Hence, he insists Chang is still alive and
he makes up his mind to leave for Nepal to rescue Chang. Captain
Haddock believes Tintin is crazy and emotional. He tries to persuade
Tintin to give up this kind of crazy ideas. He even says that:” Go to Nepal,
go to Timbuctoo, go to Vladivostok for all I care! But you’ll be on your
own, remember; I’m not coming and that’s flat! And when I say so, I
mean no!” But, two days later, Captain Haddock and Tintin get to New
Delhi by air and wait to change the plane for Katmandu.
As one of Tintin’s best friends, Captain Haddock attempts to persuade
Tintin to give up the irrational idea to rescue Chang. But he fails to do it.
On the other hand, he is so worried about Tintin than he can’t leave Tintin
alone. As a result, he decides to go with Tintin regardless of how
dangerous it will be. That’s the true friendship between Tintin and
Captain Haddock.
Secondly, true friends will offer us help when we are in need.
I want to illustrate my idea from by an example which is selected from a
book, Charlotte’s web. Wilbur is a spring pig and Charlotte is a spider.
They are good friends. In the farm, every spring pig’ fate is to be fattened
up and killed at Christmastime. That frightens Wilbur and gets him into a
panic. As the friend of Wilbur, Charlotte promise to come up with good
ideas to save his life. Fortunately, a good idea occurs to her that is to
write good words in her web to let people believe Wilbur is unusual and
excellent. Then, she dedicates herself to writing words in her web to
demonstrate Wilbur’s excellence. Wilbur gains a lot of attraction and
fame. At last, Wilbur goes to the county fair and wins a prize. His future
is assured and he will live, secure and safe. Nothing can harm him.
Charlotte makes good on her word and successfully changes Wilbur’s
fate.
A friend in need is a friend indeed. Charlotte tries hard to help Wilbur just
because he is her friend and she likes him. She has ever said that to
Wilbur:” You have been my friend .That in itself is a tremendous thing.”
Therefore, she is willing to offer her help at any time when Wilbur needs
her. That’s the true friend who renders timely help.
Thirdly, true friends are willing to sacrifice themselves to help us.
In order to save his Chinese friend Chang, Tintin reaches Nepal and risks
his life to climb the snow-capped mountain. In the extremely bad weather,
Tintin almost loses his life. However, nothing can stop him. His bravery
and courage help him rescue his friend at last.
The other moving story happens between Tintin and Captain Haddock.
When Captain Haddock clambers up tricky rocks, the rock he climbs
suddenly becomes loose and falls down. And Captain Haddock is hung in
the air and there’s no way of regaining a foothold on that perishing
rockface. It is extremely cold. Tintin and Captain Haddock start freezing
to death. Tintin gets paralysed with cold so he doesn’t have enough
energy to pull Captain Haddock up. That is very dangerous. Therefore,
Captain Haddock shouts:” Which means we both fail! That’s no good,
young fellow. You, at least, can save yourself. You must cut the rope: it’s
the only answer.” But, Tintin doesn’t obey Captain’s order. He
answered:” Never! Either we’re both saved, or we die together!” Then,
Captain Haddock takes out his knife to cut the rope for the sake of Tintin.
Luckily, both of them are saved by Tharkey who is their guide and comes
in time.
In my opinion, each reader may be touched by Tintin and Captain
Haddock’s deep friendship. At that crucial moment, Captain Haddock
doesn’t care about himself. All he wants to do is to save Tintin’s life.
Tintin is young and he still has a long time to pursue and realize his
dreams. Hence, Captain Haddock would prefer to sacrifice himself to
save Tintin. How great friendship is!
As life is full of obstacles and conflicts, everyone needs friendship. No
one can sail the ocean of life alone. With friendship, life is happy and
harmonious. Without friendship, life is boring and unfortunate. Thereby,
we should cherish our friendship which is the most precious treasure in
our life. In addition, I firmly believe that everyone has his true friend. If
we are honest and sincere to others, we will come across him one day.
Please try to use our hearts to find out our own true friends.
