The gym teacher blew the whistle(哨子)and four students dived
into the swimming pool, racing to the other side. Then the next
four were up, but only three stood on the diving board. "Where is
Ren "the gym teacher asked in concern.
Ren's face turned red, and he was unsteady. He looked at the pool
and stepped back. "You cannot make me do this!"he said.
Sadie patted him on the back gently. "You can do it! I will help you
if you need it. "Ren stared into Sadie's eyes and he calmed down.
“You can do it. You need to pass this class. ”The gym teacher said.
Ren stepped on the diving board, putting his goggles(护目镜)over
his eyes, and the blue cap hid his red hair. The whistle blew and
Ren stood there as the other three swam away. Then one boy ran
and pushed Ren into the water.
Sadie glared at the boy. "Why would you do that "A minute passed
by and Ren still wasn't coming up. Sadie jumped in and pulled him
out of the water. She gave him CPR(心肺复苏),and it took a while
until water came out of his lungs. Then finally he spat out the water
and sat up, feeling dizzy.
Ren looked over at Sadie, who breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank
goodness! Why didn't you use your arms or legs "Ren stared away
from Sadie, looking at the bottom of the blue pool, then looking
up at the gym teacher who rolled his eyes. “I can't swim. My
parents never taught me as a kid. We are afraid of water. "
Sadie put her hand on his shoulder. “Don't worry. I will teach you
how to swim. The water is my favourite place to be. "Ren thought
for a while, and nodded gently.

Palm trees seemed to speed by the car window. Eight-year-old
Katrina began to get nervous, the way she always did in new
surroundings. She felt a thin shine of sweat above her lip in spite of
the car's cool air. "The aquarium won't be crowded, I bet, and
people are gonna notice me. I hate wearing this prosthesis leg(假
肢). "She felt tears pinprick behind her eyes. “Not being normal is
the worst. ”
Entering the Clear water Marine Aquarium, around a comer of a
tank, she noticed an animal that looked unusual. “Is that a dolphin
with stump(假肢)instead of a tail?" she asked an aquarium staff.
He nodded. “Yes, that’s Winter. She’s a very special dolphin. ”“What
happened to her ”"This girl dolphin was found off the coast of
Florida, caught in a crab trap. The ropes from the trap cut off the
blood circulation to her tail. So she lost her tail, ”Katrina caught her
breath. “She’s just like me. She's just like me. ""But she struggled to
survive. Now she wears a prosthetic tail part of the day to help her
swim like a dolphin's supposed to swim, " the staff continued,
"Every day, Winter shows us anything is possible if we believe. ”
Katrina felt her heart-string was touched. She waved at Winter.
Looking at Katrina, Winter raised her flipper(鳍),came to her and
lifted her head. "She's swimming right into my arms,"Katrina said
tearfully. They made eye contact. She seemed to be speaking to
Katrina:We're the same. Back home, all Katrina talked about was
Winter. For two weeks, she cried and begged her mother to take
her back to Clear water.
Unfortunately, another blow hit Katrina. She fell on the hardwood
floor at home and broke her other leg. Katrina was in constant leg
nerve pain. After a through examination, the doctor explained bad
news that she would need another surgery on her leg. Years of a
living hell came back to her. She started fearing surgery again and
refused to take any.

High-school sports is the biggest thing that happens in our town
of Verden, population six hundred. Sports are important in our
family. Both of our sons were high-school athletes. So I shouldn't
have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out
for the girls' basketball team, but I was because she has Down
syndrome(唐氏综合症). My wife and I never told Lauren that she
was different, treating her like our other children.
“I'm gonna play basketball, Daddy. ”Lauren flew into my arms when
I came in from work. “That's nice, honey, ”I replied automatically
and patted her, figuring she meant outside——on the driveway.
Walking into the kitchen, I met my wife Laura, whose frown
indicated I'd missed something. Laura spoke slowly, her tone steady.
"She meant she's joining the girls' high-school basketball team. ”
Just as her words sank in, I heard Lauren behind me. "I'm gonna be
a Lady Tiger, " she yelled, skipping into the room and throwing her
arms in the air. Everything that could happen flashed through my
mind. I discussed Lauren's announcement with my wife that
evening and finally agreed. After all, there were only 11 girls, not
everyone willing to play.
The next afternoon, I parked in front of the school gymnasium.
Inside, Coach Forsy the greeted us, "We're glad Lauren came out
for the team. She is not just a cheerleader!"Lauren stood alone at
the other end of the court, shooting free throws. No other girl on
the court grinned(咧嘴笑)like Lauren did,and after every shot、
Lauren approvingly cried,"Woo hoo!",seemingly not caring if she
made the basket or not.
Mid-November, the season's first basketball game arrived. I settled
into a seat with the rest of my family. The game got off to a good
start, but soon Lady Tigers was behind. Lauren followed the
movement on the court and reacted to every play. Even though
Lauren wasn't playing, she looked as if she were having the time of
her life. I felt admiration for my daughter. Plus, her team was
getting beat, yet she still enjoyed the action. Just less than two
minutes left, and Lady Tigers was down by seventeen points.

It was cool and bright and just right for running. I was in the first
few miles of a 10-mile race through some hills. Birds were singing
on the trees. The soft wind was brushing my cheeks. I felt rested
and springy. Despite the hills, I thought it was going to be a fine
run.
Ahead was Blake, a student from Burke High School. He was
running easily, too, moving along efficiently. The pace felt
comfortable, so I decided to stay where he was; why bother
concentrating on pace when Blake was such a nice pacesetter for
me I would overtake Blake later on when he used up energy.
So I ran closely behind him. The course headed north for five miles,
wandered west for a mile, and then turned south again. The race
was getting tougher. With three miles to go, it was beginning to be
real hard work. My lungs were on fire, and legs felt like stone.
Blake overtook the boy in front of him. Apparently he knew the boy,
for they exchanged a few words. Their brief communication
worried me. Runners don’t chat during a race unless they feel really
good, and Blake plainly was. There was still a noticeable bounce in
his steps, but the springiness I had once possessed was gone.
Still, I was close enough to overtake Blake if he was tired, so I didn’t
give up hope completely. We were approaching a hill, a mile from
the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost
certainly determine who crossed it first.
As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes.
When I looked up, Blake was moving away, first five yards, then ten,
then more. There was no hope of catching Blake.

Suddenly Blake slowed and sat onto the ground painfully.
