A few years ago, Darla Hoff painted a pumpkin face onto a round straw bale(

)at A1 and Karen

Goldman's farm in Idaho Palls to advertise her U-pick pumpkin field. While Darla has stopped growing pumpkins, the

annual tradition of straw bale art lives on at the farm and has drawn friends and neighbors to participate in it. Past

creations have included an owl, Minions, tractors and a teddy bear.

To make the tractors, A1 baled round straw bales in two different sizes smaller ones for the tractor's front tires and

larger ones for the rear(

尾部

). Large square bales made up the bodies. Jerry Kienlen used his farming equipment to

arrange the bales in the shape of two tractors. Then it was time to bring the tractors to life. Karen and her daughter.

Lana Hedrick, secured some green paint, and A1 got some red paint. Darla's husband, James, sprayed the creation with

a paint gun. For the finishing touches, Steven donated two shiny exhaust stacks (

排气管

),and A1 and Karen donated two

steering wheels from their farm parts.

The farm's annual straw bale art projects have now become a way for everyone to celebrate the end of another

growing season. It's just something fun to do together after harvest. This neighborhood has always been close.

Generations of these families have grown crops in this soil. Raised on the farms where they live now, they grew up

together as their elders did before. A1 and Karen are truly super neighbors. Every year they also grow about two acres

of corn to give away. Anyone can pick some, or A1 and Karen will even deliver. And during long Idaho winters, everyone

A woman grasped her phone to her heart the way a minister might hold a Bible. She was anxious to

take a picture of a bunch of flowers that sat not 10 feet away, but first she had to get through a crowd of others pushing

to do the same. The cause of this was Bouquets to Art, one of the most popular annual events at the de Young Museum in

San Francisco. For the 34th year, artists were asked to create flower bunches that respond to pieces of art on display,

from ancient carvings to contemporary sculptures. It’s time to take a photo to post on Instagram, but to the point that it

has become a problem.

In recent years» the de Young received more than a thousand complaints from people who felt that cell phones had

ruined their experience. In fact, institutions of fine art around the world face similar problems as the desire to take

photographs becomes a huge draw for museums as well as something that upsets some of their visitors. So the de Young

responded with a kind of compromise: carving out “photo free” hours during the exhibition’s six-day run.

One common complaint in the ongoing debates over the effect of social media on museum culture is that people

seem to be missing out on experiences because they are so busy collecting evidence of them. A recent study in the journal

Psychological Science suggests there is some truth to this; it found that people who took photos of an exhibit rather than

simply observing it had a harder time remembering

what they saw. But the issue is complicated for the professionals running museums. Linda Butler, the de Young’s

head of marketing, communications and visitor experience, acknowledges that not everyone wants a museum to be “a

photo-taking playland. ” Yet a lot of other people do, and she thinks that the de Young is in no position to judge that one

motivation for buying a $ 28 ticket is more valid than another. “If we removed social media and photography,” she says,

“we would risk becoming less popular.” If this is a battle, signs indicate that the pro-phone crowd (

亲手机人群

) has

already won.

1

What were the crowd eager to do in Paragraph 1?

A

To hold a Bible. B

To admire flowers.

C

To take a photo. D

To see the exhibition.

2

How did the de Young respond to the complaints?

A

By setting periods without photo-taking.

B

By making the exhibition free of charge.

C

By compromising with other institutions.

D

By giving extra time to take photos freely.

3

What can we infer about the use of social media in museums according to the recent study?

A

It uncovers the truth.

C

It causes complaints.

B

It accumulates evidence.

D

It plays a negative role.

4

Which of the following may Linda Butler support?

A

Catering to visitors.

C

Reserving judgement in public.

B

Reducing admission prices.

D

Banning social media and photography.

24.(8分)

Connecting with people has become so much easier with advancing technology. Tasks that once

required a postage stamp or carrier pigeon are now as simple as tapping a name or even a face on your screen, and

you’re connected. But also easier is unconsciously getting caught up in a dilemma by violating certain new rules for

communicating. A big one for some: Don’t call until you’ve texted to confirm it’s OK to call. But that’s just the

beginning.

“I’m usually pretty mild and not much bothers me,” said Mark Angielle, a 29-year-old office manager from White

Plains, New York. But the one thing that he hates more than anything else in life is the terrible one-word message —

“K.” “At the very least reply with, Got it.” he said “At least give me a few words here. You’re not that busy.”

There are hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of others who have taken Lo social media to express their distaste for

people who don’t follow the unwritten rules of digital communication.

“These rules are simply a new display of a phenomenon we’ve seen in the past,” said James Ivory, professor of

communication a Virginia Tech. In the same way that generations and small groups of friends have their own slang and

customs, internet culture has given birth to technology-dependent beings that have their own unique set of routine.

But not everyone gets the point. Unlike language, digital communication can be filled with ambiguous clues (

线索、

迹象

) that the person on the other end of the call, text or email may or may not easily understand.

“As soon as people aren’t talking face to face, the first thing that gets lost is some of the richness of the body

language,” Ivory said, “People immediately fill that gap by using emoji (

表情符号

) to sum up a feeling in seconds.

“There's great potential for danger,” Ivory warned. “What's considered polite in one form might be inappropriate

or rude in another occasion.”

1

What can you infer about Mark from Paragraph 2?

A

He is a businessman with a bad temper.

B

He complains about social manners.

C

He can’t bear one- word messages.

D

He dislike a busy business life.

2

According to the text, which of the following breaks the rules for communicating?

A

John says “I got it.” to his boss face to face.

B

Jim calls Bill without confirming in advance.

C

Mary texts Lily to make sure if she can call her.

D

Jack sends “Thanks a lot” to his business friends.

3

Why may people misunderstand each other during digital communication?

A

Emoji cannot sum up feelings.

B

People use their own slang and customs.

C

There are large quantities of written rules.

D

People gets wrong messages without clear clues.
