Sirine Jahangir has been singing, writing and performing music since she was a little
girl. She lost all her vision in one eye by the time she turned 5, so now the teen uses her
gift “as away to—not escape, but to help me through.” Not only did her passion get her
through some difficult times, but when she was 14 it also brought her to the “Britain’s
Got Talent” stage, where she impressed everyone with her performance.
Sirine has a rare condition that left her completely blind by the times she was 10
years old. While her parents and doctors have tried to find treatments for her, there isn’t
much they can do. So her parents focused on helping her adjust to her new life, which
was when her dad said she was first introduced to music “I remember one day, we were
driving in the car. This is about when she was getting to the stage where she couldn’t
look out the window anymore to see things, and I didn’t know what to do. I just put the
music on really loud. She started singing in the car, and she was so happy. And then she
just found happiness every time I put it on,” her father said.
It didn’t take long for them to realize Sirine has tremendous talent. When she
appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent”, she told everyone just how much her passion means
to her. “I guess music i s my vision,” she said. “That’s just what I live by, and music is
my thing.” Then she headed over to the piano, where she played the piano and sang
beautifully enough to bring the audience to tears! Unsurprisingly to everyone but Sirine,
all four judges voted her into the next round of the competition!
Afterward, she said, “I can’t even say it’s a dream come true, because I didn’t even
dream of it at I never thought that would be realistic in my life.”
4. What did the “Britain’s Got Talent” stage mean to Sirine?
A.This stage had earned her both fame and fortune.

D.She demonstrated her excellent musical talent on the stage.
5. How did her parents discover Sirine’s musical talent?
A.By talking to her about music topics.
B.By playing music to her while driving.
C.By asking famous singers for identification.
D.By discovering the lyrics and songs she wrote.
6. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Everyone was moved by Sirine’s live performance.
B.Sirine won the championship of the British Got Talent Show.
C.Sirine advanced onstage by selling her tragic experiences.
D.Sirine’s performance received votes from everyone present.
7. What message does the author want to convey to us according to the passage?
A.Every road leads to Rome.
B.Never give up until you succeed.
C.Music inspires a new life for a person.
D.There will always be a rainbow after storms.
Culture shock occurs when people have been suddenly thrown into a new culture.
Newcomers maybe anxious because they don’t speak the language. Neither do they know
the customs nor understand the people’s behavior in daily life.
Quite often the visitors find that “yes” may not always mean “yes”, that friendliness
does not necessarily mean friendship, or that statements that appear to be serious are
really intended as jokes. The foreigners maybe unsure as to when to shake hands, when to
start conversations, or how to approach a stranger. The idea of culture shock helps
explain feelings of puzzlement and confusion.
Language problems do not lead to all the setbacks that people feel. When one has
lost everything that was once familiar, such as understanding a transportation system,
knowing how to register (注册,登记) for university classes, or knowing how to make
friends, difficulties in coping with the new society may arise.
When an individual enters a strange culture, he or she feels like a fish out of water.
Newcomers feel at times that they do not belong to the culture and feel deserted by the
native members of the culture. When this happens, visitors may want to refuse everything
about the new environment and may glorify and sing their own praises of the positive
aspects of their own culture. On the other side, more visitors may sneeze at their native
country by rejecting its value and instead choosing to approve of the value of the new
country. This may occur as an attempt to accept the new culture in order to be taken in by
the people in it.
8. What might happen when newcomers enter a new culture?
A.They have difficult yin saying yes or no.
B.They find it annoying to understand the friendship.
C.They refuse to shake hands with strangers.
D.They are puzzled by local customs and habits.
9. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “setbacks” in paragraph 3?
A.discouragements B.achievements C.arguments D.amazement
10. How do the newcomers react in the face of the culture shock according to the last
paragraph?
A.They will miss their motherland deeply enough to return to their homeland.
B.They are willing to accept a new culture unconditionally and completely.
C.They try their best to fit into local life and live a positive and upward life.
D.They only contact fellow countrymen with the same experience.
11. What will the next paragraph talk about?
A.What to do to ignore the differences. B.How to live comfortably abroad.
C.How to deal with the culture shock.
D.What to do to avoid homesickness.
Earthquake forecasting is one of the most ancient skills known to mankind. From
ancient Greece to the present day, countless scientists have tried to develop tools to
predict earthquakes. Their attempts usually focused on searching for reliable evidences of
coming quakes.
However, there are many reasons why predicting quakes is so hard. “We don’t
understand some basic physics of earthquakes,” said Egill, a research professor at the
California Institute of Technology. Scientists have also attempted to create mathematical
models of movement, but precisely predicting would require great mapping and analysis
of the Earth’s crust. Other challenges include a lack of data on the early warning signs,
given that these warning signs are not yet entirely understood. Actually, real earthquake
prediction is very similar to the diagnosis of potential human illnesses based on observing
and analyzing each patient’s signs and symptoms. As it turns out, quake prediction is
extremely difficult.
Many sources show that earthquake forecasting was a recognized science in ancient
Greece. Ancient Greeks lived very close to nature and were able to detect unusual
phenomena and forecast earthquakes. The first known forecast was made by Pherecydes
of Syros about 2500 years ago: he made it as he scooped water from a well and noticed
that usually very clean water had suddenly become muddy. Indeed, an earthquake
occurred two days later, making Pherecydes famous. Nowadays, seismic and remote-
sensing methods are considered to have the greatest potential in terms of solving the
earthquake prediction problem.
Currently, Terra Seismic can identify a forthcoming earthquake with a high level of
confidence. Generally, Terra Seismic does not predict a quake if the earthquake’s
epicenter is located beyond a depth of 40 km. Fortunately, such quakes are almost always
harmless, since quake’s energy reduces before reaching the Earth’s surface. “Scientists
have tried every possible method to try to predict earthquakes,” Bruneau said. “Nobody
has been able to crack it and make a believable prediction.”
12. What do we know about earthquake forecasting?
A.Scientists have been passionate about accurately predicting earthquakes.
B.As long as enough data is collected, earthquakes can be predicted.
C.Mathematical models of motion can simulate and predict earthquakes.
D.Scientists have not yet fully studied the structure of earthquakes.
13. How did Pherecydes successfully predict earthquakes?
A.By seismic and remote-sensing methods.
B.By observing unusual natural phenomena.
C.By living in seismic zones throughout the year.
D.By looking into data on the early warning signs.
14. What was Bruneau’s opinion about the current methods of earthquake prediction?
A.He strongly believed the Terra Seismic can solve the difficult problem.
B.He was sure that humans could accurately predict earthquakes in the future.
C.He considered it harmless to humans for an earthquake deeper than 40km.
D.He thought that scientists had no reliable method to predict earthquakes.
15. Which question does this article focus on?
A.Why do humans predict earthquakes?
B.How to protect oneself during an earthquake?
C.What methods can be used to forecast earthquakes?
D.When to achieve accurate earthquake forecasting?

Being a good person means more than just doing things for others. In order to truly
be good, you will have to consider what ‘goodness’ means to you. Perhaps this means
doing good for others, or simply being an honest and kind person. 16
Determine what being a good person means to you personally. Some people think
that being a good person is as simple as not doing harm to another. But it is not always
about what you don’t do, but what you do for others. 17 You have to decide what
you believe being a good person needs.
