Eating a diet high in processed food increases the risk of depression, a study

suggests. What's more, people who ate plenty of vegetables, fruit and fish

actually had a lower risk of depression, the University College London team

found.

Data on diet among 3500 middleaged civil servants were compared with

their emotional state five years later, a British journal reported. They split the

participants into two types of diet—those who ate a diet largely based on

wholefood(全天然食物), which includes lots of fruit, vegetables and fish,

and those who ate a mainly processed food diet, such as sweetened desserts,

fried food, processed meat, refined grains and high fat dairy products. After

accounting for factors such as gender, age, education, physical activity,

smoking habits and chronic(慢性的) diseases, they found a significant

difference in the future depression risk with the different diets.

Those who ate the most wholefood had a 26% lower risk of future depression

than those who ate the least wholefood. By contrast, people with a diet high

in processed food had a 58% higher risk of depression than those who ate a

diet low in processed food.

Study author Dr. Archana Singh Manoux pointed out there was a chance that

the finding could be explained by the lifestyle factor they had not accounted

for. He also pointed out in a paper that a Mediterranean diet was associated

with a lower risk of depression, but the problem with that is if you live in

Britain, the likelihood of eating a Mediterranean diet is not very high.

Dr. Andrew McCulloeh, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation,

said, this study adds to an existing body of solid research that shows the strong

links between what we eat and our mental health.

He added people's diets are becoming increasingly unhealthy. The UK

population is consuming less nutritious, fresh produce and more saturated fats

and sugars

The passage is mainly about ______()

increasingly unhealthy diet of the UK population

emotional state of the British people

Publicity(宣传,报道) offers several benefits. There are no costs for message

time or space. An ad in prime time television may cost $250,000 or more

per minute, whereas a five-minute report on a network newscast would not

cost anything. However, there are costs for news releases(发布), a publicity

department, and other items. As with advertising, publicity reaches a mass

audience. Within a short time, new products or company policies are widely

known.

Credibility are much fewer in number and stand out clearly.

Publicity also has some significant limitations. A firm has little control over

messages, their timing, placement(报道顺序), or coverage. It may issue

detailed news releases and find only small portions of them reported by the

media; and media have the ability to be much more critical than a company

would like. A firm may want publicity during certain periods, such as when a

new product is introduced or new store opened, but the media may not cover

the introduction or opening until after the time it would aid the firm. Similarly,

media determine the placement of a story; it may follow a report on crime

or sports. Finally, the media ascertain(确定) whether to cover a story at all

and the amount of coverage to be devoted to it. A company-sponsored(赞

助) job program might go unreported or receive three-sentence coverage in

a local newspaper

The author mentions all of the following advantages of publicity EXCEPT()

no time costs

attentiveness

high credibility

no space costs

tone of the passage is _____()

ges are remarkably complex and wonderfully complicated organs

of culture. They contain the quickest and the most efficient means of

communicating within their respective culture. To learn a foreign language is

to learn another culture. In the words of a poet and philosopher, As many

languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives. A culture and its language

are as necessary as brain and body; while one is a part of the other, neither

can function without the other. In learning a foreign language, the best

beginning would be starting with the non-language elements of the language:

its gestures, its body language, contact is extremely important in

English. Direct eye contact leads to understanding, or, as the English saying

Every country has secret services to help protect it against serious threats from

terrorists, major criminals or even from other countries. People who threaten

to harm a country always plot in secret, so the intelligence agencies have to

work in secret to find out what is being planned before it happens, so that it

can be prevented. They do that in many different ways—by secretly listening

to their targets talking on the phone, by planting microphones to overhear

meetings, by watching the targets as they move from place to place and by

recruiting some of the targets to act as double agents to report on what is going

on.

For most of my career I worked in one of the UK’s three intelligence services,

MIS, the domestic security service. I first joined in the 1970s, in the middle

of the Cold War, when the war was divided into two armed camps, the Soviet

Union and its allies on the one side and Western Europe, America and their

allies on the other. The Cold War never became a fighting war. It was an

intelligence war, with intelligence officers from both sides trying to find out

what the other side was doing, what kind of weapons they had, when and if

they might start a war and what their plans were. Both sides were secretly

working in each other’s countries.

Nowadays one of the biggest threats to the world, comes from terrorists.

Intelligence officers from many different countries are working together to

find out who they are, where they are and what they are planning. Today’s

MIS officers get their intelligence in much the same way as we did during the

Cold War, but their task is even more difficult and urgent because most

terrorists want to kill people. Many terrorist attacks that are planned and

prepared never happen, and we never know anything about them because the

intelligence services find them out and prevent them

tasks of intelligence agencies

contributions of intelligence agencies

equipment used by intelligence agents

67.A child has his pains because_____()

Nutritional(营养的) status affects children’s behavior. Well-nourished

children are more alert and attentive and are better able to benefit from

physical and learning experience. Poorly nourished children may be quiet and

withdrawn, or too active during class activities. Fat children also face many

problems. They are often slow and less able to participate in physical activities.

They may suffer from being laughed at and emotional stress by being

excluded from playmates.

Children’s resistance to infections and illness is also definitely influenced by

their nutritional status. Children who are well nourished are less likely to

become ill; they also recover more quickly when they are sick. Poorly

nourished children are more sensitive to infections and illness. Illness also

increases the need for some nutrients. Thus poor nutrition creates a cycle of

illness, poorer nutritional status, and lowered resistance to illness.

(67)Malnutrition is a serious problem for many young children but it is not

always associated with poverty or a poor en of middle and

upper income families may also be malnourished because of unwise food

selections. Malnutrition occurs when there is prolonged(长期的) imbalance

between the nutrients that are required and the nutrients that are actually eaten.

Malnutrition may be the result of under-nutrition or over-nutrition.

It is important that both of these conditions be avoided in young children. An

adequate intake of all required nutrients is most vital during early periods of

growth and development. Also, the effects of nutritional deficiency on

physical development during early childhood are less likely to be changed by

improved dietary intake later

Well-nourished children tend to do all the following but______()

attentive while learning

too active in class

t from physical activities

very alert

is it advised to buy a baby dog under three months old()

’s easier to buy a baby dog under three months old

are less likely to run away

are less likely to be shy with human beings

’s easier for them to form a relationship with their masters

was a time when, if a lady got into a crowded bus or train, a

gentleman would immediately stand up and offer his seat. But now, things

are different. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window or if

he feels a bit shy, hide behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will

have to stand until someone else gets off.

You can’t entirely blame men for this change in manners, though. Gone are

the days when women could be referred to as weakers without causing trouble.

A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men,

not just equality in jobs or education, but in social life. Hold a door open

for some women and you are likely to get an angry lecture on treating women

as inferiors(能力低下的人) unable to open doors for themselves. Take a

girl out for meal and she’ll probably insist on paying her share of the bill. On

second thoughts, that is perhaps not such a bad idea.

It’s no wonder, then, that men have given up some ways of politeness and

consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand,

the man’s active politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true

consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see

women as equal human beings, rather than as weakers or something that

can be used to please men

Today, when a lady gets on a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would

probably()

up and offer her his seat

his newspaper

out of the window

stand up and offer her his seat
