(B)Seoul goes cow-mad
RECENT weeks have seen tens of thousands of people take
to streets in Seoul (首尔), the capital of South Korea. They carried
banners (横幅) that said “Mad cows drive our people mad”.
These people were against the government’s decision to
buy US beef. They have fears (担心) of beef with “mad cow
disease”.
Several countries stopped buying US beef after a case (病例)
of mad cow disease in 2003. But when South Korean new
president (总统) Lee Myung-bak took office in February, he
wanted to warm up ties (联系) with the US. So in April his
government agreed to continue trade (买卖) and this move (举动)
led to a flood of anger around the country.
Although both the South Korean and US governments said
US beef is safe to eat, the anger has grown into the country’s
biggest protest (抗议) in 20 years. People accused (批评) President
Lee of being out of touch with common people. They also voiced
opposition (反对) to his other policies, such as education plans.
“What Lee did is just like offering tribute (贡品) to a Chinese
emperor in the past. It’s quite humiliating (耻辱的),”said Kim
Sook-yi. The 35-year-old woman joined the protest with her two
children.
At center of the wave of anger, South Korean cabinet (内阁)
offered to step down earlier this month. The president also said
sorry to his people last Thursday. He suggested that there could
be progress in the coming trade talks with the US.

can now read about him in the new biography, The Roger Federer
Story, Quest for Perfection (《费德勒的故事,追求完美》). The

The book was written by Rene Stauffer, a famous Swiss tennis

asked about things and I don’t know for sure without
checking,”she said. “Now, I will always know where I can look
them up.”

15-year-old, I didn’t think that I would even write his name in

Be strong, but be smart
ONE day, as I walked through the garage toward my office, I
was taught a useful lesson about life.
As I opened the garage door, I saw a large moth (飞蛾) on the
wall. It was very beautiful moth, which was spreading its big
brown wings (翅膀). There were two bright red “tails”on the
wings, which made it more like a butterfly than a moth.
Perhaps because of the sound of the door opening, the moth
flew immediately out. There is
a window on the ceiling (天花板). The moth tried its best to
get out through the invisible (看不见的) wall of the window glass.
I raised the garage door wider in hopes of helping the moth
to escape from the garage. However, it tried to fly higher and
farther from the door and got trapped (困) in a spider’s web (网).
Worrying that the beautiful moth would become a spider’s
dinner, I picked up a broom (扫帚) to help it fight against the
spider’s web. However, it became even more frightened. After
it got away from the web, the moth pumped (扇动) his wings hard
and ran into the glass. But no matter how hard it tried, the moth
remained in the cage of the garage.
I left the garage with the door open. I thought by simply
turning his focus to one side, he could escape the garage through
the door. Sometimes, people need to choose the right way before
applying effort.
