How to pack like a professional
Your flights are booked, and your itinerary is planned. Now all you have to do is pack your
suitcase. That may seem simple, but in fact, suitcase-packing is a skill which must be learned.
Flight attendant Rosa Kay knows this only too well. Her work takes her all around the globe, and
she is an experienced suitcase packer. She says, “Most people pack far too much when they travel.
Less can be more!”
So what does a well-packed suitcase look like? First of all, it doesn’t contain pieces of paper and
travel documents. Rosa says, “Often travelers carry far too many bits of paper. It adds to the stress
and it’s more to carry. Digitize your documents!”
Packing too many devices is another mistake. Rosa explains, “If you’re planning on taking
holiday photos, ask yourself if you really need an expensive, heavy camera. Wouldn’t your
smartphone be just as good? Many people pack laptops too, but if you will just be accessing social
media on vacation, why bother?”
Finally, clothing. Have you ever packed lots of clothes to take on holiday, and worn only half of
them? If so, you’re not alone. Rosa says, “Make a pile of all the clothes you want to take, and then
halve it. You won’t regret it! And roll your clothes, don’t fold them. This will take up much less room
in your case.
Do you have any top packing tips? If so, we’d love to hear from you!

experience city life for a few days. We could go to the theatre, eat out in a restaurant or two and you
could take me sightseeing!
Of course, this all depends if it’s okay with you and with your parents. I’ve already asked my

recorded question. When you hear a question, choose the correct answer.
1.
M: I don’t have much money, but I’d love to travel the world.
W: Why don’t you go on a working vacation? I’m sure you could find a seasonal job.
Q: What does the woman suggest?
2.
W: I don’t want to work in an office all summer. I hate being indoors.
M: Why not get a job as a fruit picker? You’ll get lots of fresh air.
Q: What does the woman dislike?
3.
M: My uncle’s looking for workers on his farm at harvest time.
W: That sounds fun. Is it well-paid though?
Q: What does the woman want to know?
4.
W: You look great! Where have you been?
M: I’m just back from my working vacation. I’ve been working as a surfing instructor.
Q: What’s the man been doing?
5.
W: How’s Martha? Is she still studying or has she got a part-time job?
M: Actually, she’s finished her course and she’s working as a tour guide.
Q: What’s Martha doing?
Section B
Directions: Listen to the two conversations and answer the questions.
Conversation 1
W: Hi Peter! What are your plans for the summer?
M: Hi Stacey. I’m thinking about taking a working vacation actually.
W: That sounds exciting! What do you think you’ll do?
9
M: Well, I’m thinking about getting a job at a theme park. You know I enjoy dressing up and working
with children!
W: Yes, you’d be great at that! Are there a few job possibilities?
M: Yeah. This one looks really good. It’s in Paris, France.
W: Wow! Is it well-paid?
M: The money’s not great, but they pay for your travel and accommodation.
W: Sounds wonderful, Peter. Good luck!
Conversation 2
W: Hi Mark. Are you still planning your around-the-world trip?
M: I’m not sure. I think I might have changed my mind about that.
W: Really? Why? Is it too expensive?
M: No, it’s not that. The thing about traveling around the world in a year is that you don’t get to know
places very well. I’m not sure if I want to rush from place to place.
W: You mean, you want to get to know the culture of the place you visit?
M: Yeah, that’s right. I’d like to learn the language, meet some of the locals—not just see the sights
with all of the other tourists.
W: So, what’s the solution then?
M: I might just choose one country and stay there for longer. And maybe get a job.
W: What kind of job?
M: Well, I thought about teaching English somewhere. The money’s not so bad and it’s a great way of
meeting people.

Hi Alex,
Mom and Dad say “hello”!
Greetings from Chengdu! We’re having a wonderful holiday here and the weather is very good—sunny but not too hot. We arrived at our hotel last Saturday and on our first day we went to see the

We’ve been sightseeing every day—we’ve been to Mount Qingcheng and Wenshu Temple. And
of course, we’ve spent lots of time in Jinli street—the shops there are amazing!
We’ve been enjoying some delicious local food too—Chengdu smoked sausage is my favorite.
See you soon,
