ABSTRACT:Inthisethnographicstudyofsummerundergraduateresearch(UR)expe-
riencesatfourliberalartscolleges,wherefacultyandstudentsworkcollaborativelyona
projectofmutualinterestinanapprenticeshipofauthenticscienceresearchwork,analysis
oftheaccountsoffacultyandstudentparticipantsyieldscomparativeinsightsintothe
structuralelementsofthisformofURprogramanditsbenefiisonof
theperspectivesoffacultyandtheirstudentsrevealedconsiderableagreementonthenature,
range,andextentofstudents’ficstudentgainsrelatingtotheprocessof
“becomingascientist”yframedthese

theirpersonalandintellectualdevelopment,withlittleawarenessoftheirsocializationinto
gstudyfindingsthroughthelensofsocialconstructivistlearn-
