Gut Feeling/Gut Reaction 直觉

If you have a gut feeling, you sense something about a person or a situation in accordance with

instinctive feelings. gut本身有内脏的意思，gut feeling就是指内心深处的感觉。

Examples:

If you don‟t know the answer, you might as well go with your gut feeling. 如果你不知道答案，那

不妨跟着你的感觉走吧。

She had a gut feeling that something was wrong with the company. 她有种感觉，公司出了点问

题。

Be there or be square. 不见不散

Here square, as an adjective, means being dull or weird. Be there or be square is used when asking

someone to attend an event or activity. Be there or be square直译为“请准时赴约，不然就是无聊

奇怪的人”。和中文中的不见不散有相似的表达效果。

There is going to be a personal reception banquet tonight. Be there or be square.今晚有个私人的

接待晚宴。不见不散。

channel-hopping、channel-surfing 、channel-hopper或channel-surfer

在看电视的时候，有很多人会把持着遥控器不撒手，漫无目的地调换着频道，试图找一些有

意思的节目看看，并且不会在某一个频道上停留太长时间。在英文当中，就有专门描述这一

行为的词汇――“channel-hopping”和“channel-surfing”。另外，有这种行为的人，被称为是

“channel-hopper”或“channel-surfer”。

1. Channels like MTV are designed with the short attention span of today's channel-hoppers in

mind.

像MTV这样的频道是针对当今那些随意换台者的注意力仅有片刻之久的特点而设立的。

2. A good advertisement should stand out and catch the attention of people who are

channel-surfing.

rip someone off 敲竹杠

Rip someone off means cheating someone and making them pay too much for something. rip

someone off指欺骗了某人，往往使他们多花了钱，类似于汉语中的“敲竹杠”和“宰客”。rip-off

也可做名词。

Examples:

The cab driver ripped me off by taking a roundabout route. 出租车司机绕道行走，宰了我。

I got ripped off for paying extra money to that vendor.我被敲竹杠了，多付了那个小贩的钱。

Don‟t go to see that film. At last you‟ll find it is just a rip off under its strong hype.不要去看那个

When someone shows a poker face, he or she is expressionless, showing no expression and

revealing nothing about what he/she is thinking. The phrase comes up because a poker player

usually tries to hide the value of his or her cards. 打牌时，一个精于玩牌的老手往往会面无表情

来隐藏他手上到底拿了什么牌，poker face由此而来，形容那些面无表情，不动声色的人。

Examples:

I never know what my boss thinks of my work-- he is a real poker face! 我从来不知道我的老板

When you give someone a cold shoulder, you mean you treat him/her with neglect. cold shoulder

直译为“冷肩膀”，在英语中表示对某人态度冷淡，不以为然。

Examples:

I turned to him for help, but he gave me a cold shoulder. 我向他寻求帮助，但他却对我爱理不理

的。

If you greet her at a party, you‟ll get the cold shoulder. 如果你在派对上和她打招呼，你就会得到

Close Call 躲过了的险情

A close call refers to something bad that almost happened but you narrowly escaped from. Close

Call 不能从表面上理解为结束了一通电话，这里close有差一点的意思。Close Call就是指那

些差点发生，但最后被你躲过的“险情”。和close call意思相近的一个短语为close shave。

Examples：

What a close call.I almost missed the train.太险了。我差点错过了火车。

Jeanie had several close calls while she was learning to drive a 学车时，出现过好几次

险情。
