Reflections on Mulan
Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies ever! I just saw it
again recently and I have so many thoughts and feelings about it.
The story of the brave young woman who pretends to be a man
to take her father's place in the army and fight for China is just so
inspiring.
Even though the movie takes place a long time ago, I think
the lessons it teaches are really important for today too. Mulan
shows that girls can be just as tough and heroic as boys. She
proves herself to be an amazing warrior, smarter and stronger
than all the men! I love when she defeats Shan Yu and the
Hunarmada Hun army all by herself using just her quick thinking
and cleverness. Girl power!
But Mulan is about way more than just kicking butt in battle.
It's also about staying true to yourself and your family, even
when it's hard. Mulan had to hide who she really was for a long
time by pretending to be Ping. I can't imagine how difficult and
lonely that must have felt. She risked being killed or sent home in
disgrace if her secret got out. Still, she bravely kept fighting to
save China and make her family proud.
I think it's so beautiful when Mulan is welcomed back at the
end after revealing she is a woman. Her bond with her strict but
loving father is one of the most touching parts of the movie to
me. When he sees her with new eyes and gives her the highest
honor, it makes me cry every time! Her ancestors' spirits
celebrating her too is the best.
The romance between Mulan and Li Shang is super cute as
well. At first Shang is annoyed by the wimpy recruit "Ping" but
then he grows to respect Mulan's skills and courage. By the end,
he has fallen for her true self. When he calls out "You fought
brilliantly!" and then they embrace, it feels so earned and special.
They make the perfect power couple!
I'm so glad Mulan didn't just become Shang's girlfriend at
the end though. She also got her dream job as a member of the
Emperor's elite bodyguard squad! A strong female role model
who saves the day and keeps working after getting the guy?
Love that for her and for the message it sends.
Speaking of great messages, I can't leave out the iconic
Mushu and the lucky cricket. They provide so much comic relief
