How to Communicate in English with Your Parents

Being able to communicate fluently with your parents in

English can be really rewarding, but it's not always easy! Here are

some tips that have helped me get better at it.

First off, don't be afraid to make mistakes. Your parents

know you're still learning, so they won't judge you for messing

up sometimes. The more you practice speaking English with

them, the more natural it will become. Just keep trying your best.

One trick is to start small by using simple English phrases

during everyday conversations. For example, instead of saying "

我饿了" (I'm hungry), say "I'm hungry" in English. Or when you

want to get their attention, say "Mom/Dad, look at this!" instead

of the Chinese version. Getting used to using little English

phrases here and there makes it feel more normal.

You can also try narrating your day to your parents in English

when you get home from school. Tell them about what you did,

what you learned, who you hung out with, etc. They'll be

impressed by your English skills and it's great practice for

conversing more fluidly.

If there are certain English words or grammar rules you're

struggling with, ask your parents for help! They'll appreciate that

you're trying to improve. You can say something like "How do

you pronounce this word?" or "Could you help me put this

sentence together correctly?"

Another good idea is to watch English TV shows, movies or

YouTube videos together, and then discuss them in English after.

You can take turns summarizing what happened, talking about

your favorite parts, or analyzing the characters and plot lines.

Bonus points if it's educational!

Don't get discouraged if communicating in English feels

awkward at first. The more you keep at it, the more comfortable

and confident you'll become. Soon enough, you and your

parents will be having full-on conversations in English without

even thinking about it!

Speaking of which, here's a conversation starter you could

try: Ask your parents what games, books, TV shows etc. they

liked when they were your age. Then tell them your own modern

favorites and see if you can find some common ground. A fun
