Introduction
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. It is my pleasure to
be with you all tonight. As you might notice from my accent,
I am a native speaker of Cantonese, which is one of the most
widely-spoken dialects in Guangdong Province. However, like
many of you here, I learned English as a second language. And
as we all know, learning English is not an easy task,
especially when it comes to speaking.
The Challenge of Language Learning
Learning a new language always poses a challenge. It
requires one to memorize a vast amount of vocabulary, rules
of grammar, sentence structures, and pronunciation. But when
we try to speak it, the challenge doubles. We have to
overcome our anxiety, fear of making mistakes, and
frustration of not being able to express ourselves fully.
Even if we have a good command of the language, there are

communication breakdowns.
The Importance of Communication
However, communicating in English is not just a matter of
language skills, but a matter of connecting with people.
Whether it is in business, education, or personal
relationships, effective communication is crucial for success
and fulfillment. When we communicate well, we create rapport,
trust, understanding, and respect. We break down barriers and
build bridges of cooperation and collaboration.
The Role of English Speaking Competitions
One way to improve our English speaking skills is through
participating in English speaking competitions, such as the
Guangdong English Speech Contest. Such competitions not only
provide a platform for us to showcase our linguistic
abilities but also offer a great opportunity for us to learn
from others. We learn from their perspectives, styles, and
techniques. We learn how to articulate our ideas clearly and
persuasively. We learn how to connect with the audience
emotionally and intellectually.

These competitions also cultivate a healthy sense of
competition and camaraderie among us. We respect each other's
strengths and weaknesses and encourage each other to improve.
We acknowledge that we are not competing against each other,
but against ourselves. We want to be the best version of
ourselves and make a positive impact on others.
Tips for Improving English Speaking Skills
For those of us who may not yet feel confident in their
English speaking skills, here are some tips that might be
helpful:
1. Practice, Practice, Practice: The more you speak, the
more confident you become. Find a language partner or a
language exchange group to practice with. Or record yourself
speaking and listen to your pronunciation and intonation. You
can then correct your mistakes and improve gradually.
2. Learn from Native Speakers: Listening to native
speakers will help you improve your spoken English
dramatically. Watch English TV shows and movies, listen to
English podcasts, or attend English-speaking events. Pay

attention to the pronunciation, intonation, and colloquial
expressions.
3. Focus on Your Message: When speaking, focus on your
message, not on your language skills. Keep your message
simple, concise, and relevant to your audience. Use concrete
examples and vivid stories to illustrate your points.
4. Seek Feedback: Ask for feedback from others,
preferably from native speakers or English teachers. They can
help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and give you
specific advice on how to improve. Take their feedback
positively and work on it.
Conclusion
Learning English is a lifelong endeavor. It requires
patience, perseverance, and passion. But the rewards are
invaluable. By learning English, we expand our horizons, open
up new opportunities, and enrich our lives. We break down
