Studies on Listening Strategies and Teaching in Middle School
摘要: As one of the most important parts in English learning, listening provides
people the way to learn a language. However the current situation is that listening is
one of middle students’weaknesses in English learning; based on this situation this
article will concentrate on the strategies on listening teaching and try to find effective
methods in improving students’ ability in listening in middle school.

Listening plays a very important role in learning languages. As we all know,
human beings begins the languages learning with listening no matter a baby who is
coming to this world or a child who is going to learn a foreign language, listening
values a lot in human beings’communication. Middle school is the best time for
students to learn how to listen. It is necessary to emphasis listening teaching in middle
school.
current situation of listening teaching in middle school
Based on my own teaching experience and various surveys, the current situation
in middle school students’listening are as following:
2.1 Weak in listening comprehension
Students in middle school are weak in listening comprehension that they can not
follow the meaning of whole dialogue or monologue or can not catch the key words
or key sentences, thus the information they get are useless.
2.2 Less practice and worse listening ability
Most teachers in middle school put emphasis on vocabulary, grammar or
sentence structures, they seldom give students instruction or lead students to practice
their listening, thus they do not know that practice listening makes listening perfect.
2.3 Teaching materials are not typical or inappropriate
Some teachers in middle school help students practice their listening in classes
but some listening materials are not typical or boring which will make students lose
their interest in English learning.
2.4 Backward teaching methods and teaching tools
In middle school the“teachers-centered”teaching method is quite typical, with
which students can not get a good ability in English speaking and listening. Besides,
the old backward way that teacher play the tape and students listen can not help
students learn English well.
2.5 Lack of Basic English background knowledge
Most teachers in middle school do not teach students the culture difference
which makes students have some problem in understanding. gies on listening
