Unit 9 Lesson 1 To clone or not to clone
Student Worksheet
I. Activate and share.
➢ Have you heard of Dolly the sheep? What do you know about her?
Dolly is the first mammal ever to be cloned artificially from another adult
sheep.
It took scientists many attempts to produce Dolly.
Dolly was put to sleep in 2003 due to a growing lung disease.
She only lived six and a half years while a typical life span for a sheep is
about 10 to 12 years.
Her birth was of huge excitement both to the scientific world and to the
public.

II. Read and explore.
1. Read through the article and summarize the main idea of each paragraph
with some key words.
Para1: Definition of cloning and examples of natural cloning
Para2:_Attempts to clone animals artificially
Para3: The first cloned primates
Para4: _Potential benefits of cloning
Para5: Moral concerns about cloning
Para6: Attitudes towards cloning
2. Read paragraphs 1-3 and answer the questions.
1) What is cloning? (para1)
Cloning is the process of making an exact copy of a plant or animal and
developing it either naturally or artificially.
2) What examples of natural cloning are given? (para1)
An example of natural cloning is taking a cut from a plant and putting it in soil, and
another is identical twins.
3) What happened to Dolly? (para2)
——Dolly developed an illness and died when she was six and a half years old.
4) What happened to other cloned mammals? (para2)
The other cloned species suffered a similar pattern of health problems.
5) What was special about the first cloned monkeys? (para3)
They were the first-ever primates to have been cloned. Cloning primates with
non-reproductive cells was more complicated than cloning other animals.——
6) Why did scientists work so hard to clone primates? (para3)
—They wanted to break this barrier to get animals with edited genes and produce
animal models that are helpful for medical research and human health.
3. Read paragraphs 4-5. List the potential benefits of and moral concerns about
cloning primates.
Potential benefits
Moral concerns
will lead to cures for various diseases
offer clues on how to prevent the
aging process
save research time
reduce the number of animals
required for testing
produce more accurate results
lead to more effective treatments
has refreshed the technical possibility
of cloning of other species
clones should be treated as objects or
as individuals with their own identity
clones may be viewed as mere copies
and seen as inferior
some organizations may abuse the
technology
4. Read the last paragraph and answer the questions.
1) What does Einstein’s quote mean?
Einstein’s quote means that science itself cannot be judged as good or bad,
because it can only function when it is used by humans. He also indicates that
humans need to be careful with the information they learn through science and to
remember to use science for good.——
2) Why do researchers insist that the science of cloning should be further explored
and advanced?
—Researchers insist on exploring cloning to continue making progress in curing
diseases and developing treatments.
IV. Language Focus
the technical barrier突破壁垒
comparison with对比
bound to succeed 定会成功
is unknown whether无人知道是否
8.证明是prove to be
10.

13.
14.
有可能做have the potential to do
14.被看作be viewed as
Einstein said, “Science is a powerful instrument. How it is used, whether it is a
blessing or a curse to mankind, depends on mankind and not on the instrument. A
knife is useful, but it can also kill.”
V. Make a summary (P54 Exercise10)
VI. Critical Thinking.
1. What is the writer’s attitude towards cloning?
The writer is quite neutral towards the technology of cloning. He feels that cloning
can be a helpful tool in medical research but that it can also become dangerous. We
can continue exploring and developing cloning technology, but we should be cautious
in applying it and use it for the greater good of human beings.
2. How do you understand the title “to clone or not to clone”?
‘To be or not to be, that is the question’ is the most famous soliloquy(独白) in
the works of Shakespeare. The writer of this passage may have borrowed
Shakespeare’s pattern for the title, meaning that it’s a question that deserves our
careful and deliberate thought.
you think cloning is a good idea? Use what you have learnt to try to persuade
someone to accept your point of view.
