Indoor plants might look as if they just sit around not doing much, but in many ways they are the unknown
heroes of the home. Not only do they look beautiful, but studies have shown that they can increase people's
happiness by improving their mood(情绪), reducing stress and helping their memory. What's more, indoor plants
are easy to look after and are not very expensive.
Indoor plants, also known as houseplants or pot plants, are plants that like to grow indoors. For many of these
plants, they are not good to be grown outside in the UK, especially in the winter. Instead, they grow better inside,
where it is warmer. So they are easy to be looked after.
"There are many benefits to growing plants indoors. I find that during the winter months, plants around the
house can really lift your mood,"Botanic Gardens, who works at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, in London,
told The Week Junior. There is also a research showing that pot plants can clean the air around them by removing
harmful chemical from paints or cooking, as well as CO

when she saw a strange servant(仆人)who stood by her. "Why are you here?" she said to the strange woman, "I
will not let you stay. Send my Ayah to me!”
Later, someone explained to Mary that a terrible disease was killing people. Ayah was the first of the servant
to die. She heard loud cries and shouts and the sound of feet outside her door.
Mary was so afraid that she hid herself in her room. She was soon completely forgotten. ▲
She walked slowly into the dining room and found the table set with food but no one there. She ate some fruit
and biscuits and walked back to her room to sleep away the hours until someone would remember her again.
When she woke up, the house was in silence. No one cried. No one rushed past her door. "Maybe everyone
has got well." she thought. Maybe someone would remember her and bring her food and a cool drink. But no one
came.
Mary soon heard something was moving. When she looked down, she saw a small, harmless snake on the
floor. "How strange and quiet it is," she told him. He moved quietly under her door as she watched. Suddenly
Mary heard men's footsteps. Low voices sounded outside her door and she got closer to hear.
Mary looked at the door and it opened. The officer who looked in was so surprised at the sight of her that he

Airbrushing(粉饰)makes people look better in photos by using computers or mobile phones. In the beginning,
it was used to solve small problems in photos. These days, with the development of technology, it's difficult to find
a photo of a person in a magazine which hasn't been "improved" by airbrushing.
"You see these women with perfect faces, and you know they aren't real." says 15-year-old Shelly. "But when
you're reading an article about a famous person you like, you forget that, and just want to look like them." Corey,
also 15, says, "People think it's just girls that care about this matter but it's boys, too. We're supposed to have big
muscles(肌肉), like sportsmen, but that's impossible to get if it isn't your natural body shape." Research has
shown that seeing pictures of "perfect" girls in magazines makes readers to feel less confident about the way they
look.
Mobile phone apps aren't helping the situation. They allow us to change photos of ourselves until we feel
happy enough with the way we look to post them online. And although stricter rules are now in some places, there
is still a long way to go in changing media industry's idea about what is thought beautiful.
Luckily, there are plenty of people who want to change things. Actress Meghan Markle and singer Paloma
