Global warming is the process of earth’s atmosphere heating up. Over the last 100 years, the average temperature of

earth’s atmosphere has gone up 1 degree Fahrenheit. The weather has not changed exactly the

same way in every area of the planet. But scientists think that the rise in average temperature is

already affecting the earth’s climate.

Many scientists now believe that global warming is caused by cutting down trees, producing more trash, and

polluting the environment and so on. Many scientists believe that the biggest cause of global warming is new human

The greenhouse effect is not new. Certain gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane,

make it hard for heat energy to go into space. In the past, the climate didn’t change much because nature produced just

the right amount of greenhouse gases to deal with it. Today, most scientists are pretty sure that the rising temperature

can’t be blamed on nature. Ever since the industrial revolution in the 1700s, humans have relied on machines for daily

life. And many of those machines give off a lot of greenhouse gases. An increase in the release of greenhouse gases

from human activities is throwing nature off balance.

The climate is a very complicated thing, but many scientists agree that the rising atmospheric temperature has

already damaged the environment. Sheets of ice, called glaciers, are melting in Antarctica and other parts of the globe.

As glaciers break off and melt into the oceans, they are adding warm water to the oceans and causing the sea level to

rise.

Over the past 100 years, the sea level has risen 6~8 inches around the world. That means land along the coasts is

beginning to disappear under water. Bigger and warmer oceans are also adding to other weather problems caused by

pollution in the atmosphere. Some places have received more rain, others have had bigger storms and a few areas in the

world have experienced unusual droughts.

A Japanese telecom company has designed a robot that it says has emotions. But rather than run in fear from it, we’ve

welcomed it into our homes: Pepper, the“emotional robot, ”sold out within a minute of going on sale.

Created by Aldebaran Robotics and Japanese mobile giant SoftBank, Pepper went on sale to the general public in

Japan on June 20. It is“the first humanoid(类人的)robot designed to live with humans, ”Aldebaran says on its website.

Pepper costs about $1, 600. And like all good mobile products, there’s a $120 per month data fee, as well as an $80 per

month damage insurance fee. According to a news report, Pepper can pick up on human emotions and create its own

using a“multi-layer neural(神经的)network. ”Pepper’s touch sensors and cameras are said to influence its mood, which

is displayed on the tablet-sized screen on its chest.

Pepper will sigh when unhappy, and can go around your house recording your family’s daily activity. Aldebaran says

Pepper can feel“joy, surprise, anger, doubt and sadness, ”but it doesn’t say how strongly it can feel these emotions.

What happens when Pepper is having a bad day? Will it, like many humans, become uncooperative? Will it ask for

some time alone? What happens if it knows that its purpose in life is just to take part in small talk? Thankfully, Pepper

is only about four feet tall, with roller balls instead of legs, so if it is angry with and even turns on its owners, you’ll be

safe if you can make it upstairs.

Aldebaran says in reality, they’re probably quite a few years away from artificial intelligence that could create real

emotions. Aldebaran wasn’t immediately able to tell when Pepper will be available(可得的)out of Japan, but additional

sales are scheduled for July after the first 1, 000 units sell out. SoftBank currently uses the robots in its stores as greeters,

and it plans to offer Pepper to other stores in the future. Hopefully“boredom”is not an emotion Pepper can feel.

The president of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, is asking for foreign help to fight forest and agricultural fires in his country.

According to Mr Widodo, Indonesian helicopters are only able to carry a small amount of the water needed to put out

the fires. “It’s time that countries joined hands to act before everything is too late, ”the Associated Press reported his

The Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautics and Space says more than 1, 300 fires are burning across the

country. The government has sent about 25, 000 soldiers, police and firefighters in six provinces to battle the fires.

Indonesian farmers and some businesses often burn rainforest to clear land at this time of year. The burning usually

takes place during the country’s dry season. But a large rise in palm(棕榈)oil production on peat lands is blamed for

the many fires this year. Peat is made partly of dead plants, which burns easily and is often used as cooking fuel.

The resulting thick, black smoke has polluted skies over Indonesia and four other countries. The burning has

worsened air quality, closed schools and caused any outdoor activities to stop. The smoke is not only affecting people;

it is affecting wildlife. In Indonesian Borneo, an animal rescue center says some of its animals have developed

breathing problems. If the fires continue, a lot more could become sick and some could die.

Scientists have warned that the fires this year could be worst ever because of a weather system called El Nino. They

say the weather system has created extremely dry conditions in Indonesia.
